One side effect of the curve ball we were thrown i One side effect of the curve ball we were thrown in December is that our house has become a store room for holds! ⛰️ 😱 We're running out of space to put them! But any time we need a quick pick me up, we just get some of these guys out and or excitement is back 😝 ❤️ Check out these juicy numbers - just a small selection of what we've picked up from Morpho Holds We need to open quick before Gordon takes them all for his home climbing wall! 😆 🤩 Thanks again to Gaz Parry for helping us pick these out
We know, we know - we haven't given you an update We know, we know - we haven't given you an update for a while on when Indirock will be opening its doors

And right now we can't guarantee an opening date as we've had a few curve-balls thrown into the mix

BUT, we can tell you that there is A LOT going on behind the scenes and we should have news very soon 📢

THANK YOU for being so patient and we promise you'll be the first to know our news 🙏🏼
We are all about community - especially the Essex We are all about community - especially the Essex bouldering community!

We might be the flattest region in the UK but we've got a buzzing climbing scene... Colchester Climbing Project, Romford Rock & Boulder, the Chelmsford Mountaineering Club and Essex Blades Climbing Club to name a few

Who have we missed off?

We're excited to be keeping such great company and soon to complement the folks already up and running. If there's anything you'd love to see us cover at Indirock to mix things up a bit - let us know in the comments 👇🏼

We can't wait to climb with these guys as soon as we can!

The first time you go climbing, you may be surpris The first time you go climbing, you may be surprised by how much hand cream you need afterwards! 👋🏼

That's because of the chalk, which we all need on our hands to stop us slipping mid-climb.

There are a few different types of chalk you can choose from and luckily, there are no hard and fast rules for which one to choose - just go with whatever you find easiest!

▪️ Block chalk is pure chalk in a big hunk. The appeal here is less about cost savings and more that you get to crush it to your preferred consistency. It’s also less messy to transport before you crush it.

〰️ Loose chalk is already ground for you. Dump it into a chalk bag or ball and you’re good to go. Some brands offer finer and coarser grinds.

💦 Then there's liquid chalk. After you rub this chalk / alcohol blend on hands, the alcohol quickly dries, leaving a chalk residue. A plus is that it keeps both chalk dust and chalk marks to a minimum.

At Indirock, we'll have liquid chalk available for you to buy - our preferred method just because it's cleaner for our holds and for the air in our venue. But if you prefer block or powdered chalk, you're welcome to bring it with you!
We may still be a little way off from opening our We may still be a little way off from opening our doors, but our friends at walls across the UK could be getting a whiff of the light at the end of the covid-tunnel as the vaccs are rolled out 👏🏼

It won't be too much longer guys!

We asked our followers a while back what they wanted to see from us and one suggestion was

▶️ Other skills and movements in order to become a better climber ◀️

We've expressed our love of Yoga and Pilates before, but we thought it would be useful to share a few more tips if you're thinking of climbing this year. So here are a few things you can do at home:

🏋🏼 Strength training - squats and lunges will build up that all important strength in our largest muscle group - the legs. Supporting your body weight as you work on the next problem is key

💪🏼 As well as push-ups and dips to tone the arms and shoulders, try pull ups - even just hanging from a pull up bar can do wonders for upper body strength

👄 Practise breathing techniques - this will help with focus on the wall, and also regulate your breathing when you're considering your next move

✌🏼 Build up the strength in those fingers. They're invaluable, and you don't need to go as far as installing a fingerboard in your home. There are stretches and squeezes you can practise, or you could buy yourself a hand / finger grip strengthener for a fiver

What are you guys doing to keep the momentum during lockdown? Tell us below ⬇️
One of our followers shared this last week, and we One of our followers shared this last week, and we have to say - WOW 😝

This 'wall with a view' is set to open this year, in 22 Bishopsgate in Central London and they are installing a climbing wall 25 floors up - 125 metres from the ground ⬆️

It's a great sign that climbing is becoming even more mainstream - although we'll be happy with our feet firmly on our 4m wall in Southend..!

What do you think? Have you got the head for heights like these? 👇🏼

One of the things we're most excited about for Ind One of the things we're most excited about for Indirock is growing our new team. Creating much-needed jobs in Southend and sharing the next phase in our journey with you.

Right from day one we've had a steady stream of messages from amazing people who're keen to join our team. We're can't wait to start our recruitment process and see the magic happen!

You may have seen the news that our venue, the Victoria Shopping Centre, was sold just before Christmas. This has caused yet more delays to our timelines but we're not giving up - we're so close now...

As soon as we have a clearer idea of our opening date we'll start advertising the jobs we have available. There'll be a mixture of full time, part-time and freelance roles available - on both the climbing and non-climbing sides 😊

Keep your eyes peeled over the coming months. We can't wait to meet you!

Don't worry we're not going to get too gushy - but Don't worry we're not going to get too gushy - but it is Valentine's Day this weekend and we know that the best way to a climber's heart is via a chalk-bag and a bouldering wall! 🥰

You know you're a climbing fanatic when you start You know you're a climbing fanatic when you start needing to tape up your fingers... The abrasiveness of the rock or holds and the dehydrating chalk are not the friendliest to our skin!

Luckily we'll have an amazing remedy on sale, created by local brand Salix Moon. Achille's Charm is a healing balm made of 100% natural ingredients, using ancient methods in Louise's home in Chalkwell 💫

Besides that magic potion, there are lots of other things you can do to give your hands some TLC before and after a climb.

🔶 Wash all the chalk off straight away when you're done climbing, so it doesn't dry you out unnecessarily.

🔸 When you're doing your warm down, remember to give your hands some attention too!

🔶 Get a friend to give your fingers and forearms a massage.

🔸 Over the next few days, if you've had a particularly strenuous climb, you can submerge your fingers and palms in ice water for several minutes at a time to encourage your muscles to heal.

🔸 Use yoga techniques to stretch your finger, wrist and forearm muscles ready for next time.

🔶 Keep yourself hydrated – dehydrated skin is more vulnerable to injury!

Here's part 2 of our climbing shoes 101. How shoul Here's part 2 of our climbing shoes 101. How should your shoe fit?

Fit is a very important factor in finding a good pair of shoes, and how you wear your shoe depends on what you want out of your climb.

Here are some general tips which could help you when picking out a hire shoe or when buying a pair of your own.

➡️ Avoid shoes that have dead space between your toes and the inside of the shoe, since the shoe will not stay rigid when you place your toes on a foothold. That could cause you to slip.

⏩ Make sure your toes are flat or comfortably curved and that your toe knuckles aren't bunched painfully against the top of the shoe.

▶️ Your heel should have a snug fit. When you are standing on your toe, ensure the back of the shoe doesn't pinch the bottom of your Achilles tendon.

◀️ Everyone's feet bend differently, but if a shoe is difficult to slip on your foot, it is probably too tight.

In general, the higher performance the shoe, the tighter the fit.

When shoe shopping, it can be a good idea to try them on in the afternoon or after you've been doing some walking. That's because our feet swell to a bigger size when we use them - you don't want to discover your shiny new shoes are too tight as soon as you get on the walls!

If you're buying shoes for kids, unlike adults, choose them about a size too big. Children usually prefer a relaxed fit to start with. As their skill level increases, so will the size of their feet - and you'll get more use out of them!

And remember, if it's uncomfortable then no-one's having fun. You won't climb at your best. So ignore what everyone else says and go with what feels right for you!

If you've been given any advice about climbing sho If you've been given any advice about climbing shoes from experienced climbers, chances are you've come away a bit intimidated. There's so much choice for shoe style, closings and fit... and often what is best advice for experienced climbers feels seriously uncomfortable when you're new to it!

Here's part 1 of a climbing shoes 101 for the uninitiated. We edited this down from a longer article which you can find on the @rei blog - check them out!

Rock climbing shoes are the interface between you and the rock, and the wrong type of shoe or fit can hold you back. There are three broad types of climbing shoes: neutral, moderate and aggressive.

Neutral ↙️
These shoes offer a relaxed fit for all-day comfort. They allow your toes to lie flat inside the shoes. Because they tend to be more comfortable, neutral shoes are a great choice for beginner climbers, but they’re also good for experienced climbers who want comfortable shoes for an all-day climb.

Moderate ⬇️
Moderate shoes are distinguished by their slightly downturned shape (also called camber) that makes them good for technical climbing. These all-purpose shoes can handle a wide variety of climbs and are great when you want to start getting a bit more control out of your shoe.

Aggressive ↘️
These shoes have very downturned toes and lots of heel tension to put your feet in a strong and powerful position for challenging overhanging climbs. Most aggressive shoes have an asymmetric shape that curves toward the big toe, focusing power over the toe, which helps you place your feet precisely over small holds. Because of the snug fit and downturned shape, these are great for bursts of climbing but not so easy to walk around in!

Indirock will provide shoes for hire, with a range of sizes on offer for both adults and children. Our shoes will be in the neutral category, so a great all-rounder for any climbing ability ✔️

Climbing requires flexibility, strength, balance, and focus. It can also be a great mindfulness experience as you put all of your mental and physical energy into the wall

Sound familiar?

With so many similar traits, yoga and climbing can go hand in hand.

We've been exploring the idea of running yoga for climbing sessions with a beautiful local yoga venue, so you can up your climbing game even before Indirock opens. Comment below if this is something you're interested in! 👇🏼

You may have heard a lot of pro- climbing and boul You may have heard a lot of pro- climbing and bouldering propaganda from us (sorry about that ☺️) but how do you actually get into it?

We know it can be intimidating and a little overwhelming to try something completely new. You don't know where to go, how to use the equipment, whether you'll be any good...

Well when it comes to Indirock, everyone is invited. We love it when we visit a bouldering wall which feels as welcoming to newbies as it is hardcore climbers, so that's what we're going to create 🤟🏼

We'll be offering sessions for those new to bouldering, where one of our trained staff will be on hand to show you the ropes (well not literally, as bouldering doesn't require ropes!) and walk you through those first steps

If you are new to climbing and want to try it out when lockdown is over, why not comment below and let us know what you're excited/nervous about - one of the experienced climbers in our community may even dip in to to give you some advice!

But we miss the fact we can't meet YOU in person. It's starting to get hard now! Some of you we know very well, and others we hope to in the not too distant future

We hope you're doing okay and staying positive. All your messages of support are the fuel that keeps us going through all the delays of the past year, so thank you!
