13 Jul The perfect family day out in Southend
Steeped in history and holding onto many of its traditional seaside roots, Southend is a City on the sea. Hosting magnificent views of the Thames Estuary and a community packed full of independent businesses, it’s a vibrant and exciting spot to spend some time. With a new wave of businesses investing in the area, there is so much for all the family to enjoy.
Indirock, Southend’s new indoor bouldering wall, arrived on the high street in early 2022. Already it’s changing the face of the area and bringing a new experience-led style of venue to the high street.
Husband and wife, Emily and Gordon, founded Indirock after moving back to Essex from London and saw an opportunity to bring bouldering to the area. Just to add to the journey they soon started their family, and with their daughter in tow have created an environment at Indirock suitable for everyone, catering for babies up to their more mature customers into their 70’s.
There’s always the draw of the beach but if you’re keen to explore more of what Southend has to offer, why not head to the top of the town and off the beaten track? With so much to see and do for all ages in our City, the Indirock team wanted to share some of the hidden gems in Southend-on-sea.
Here are just some of the days out and activities available to visitors and locals alike:
Southend Central Museum & Planetarium
Southend Central Museum and Planetarium is home to an exciting selection of internationally significant archaeology, and is a quick stroll from the high street. It’s part of the group which also includes Prittlewell Priory, Southchurch Hall and the Beecroft Art Gallery, and all venues have incredible stories to tell, fascinating collections and engaging displays and exhibitions on show, suitable for the whole family.
Pong
A different vibe, but also lots of fun, PONG is a brand new cocktail bar experience in the heart of the city of Southend. The first of its kind in the area, PONG is a ping pong bar and a destination venue with cool decor, cocktails and craft beer: and the good news is children are welcome Tuesday – Thursday before 7pm. If they’re old enough to hold a paddle, they are old enough to play!
Caddies
If you’re looking to give your kids some wonderful memories and a hilarious day out, then head over to Caddies. They take the classic game of mini golf, and inject some added fun and craziness. Caddies Crazy Golf is a fantastic place for family fun, and with all the added surprises and features, it’s almost too much excitement! Indirock have had a few work nights out there and it’s always a blast.
Kittea Cakes Cat Cafe
This one is for cat lovers – the first cat cafe in Essex. Book a visit and enjoy a hot drink, cake or even book an afternoon tea while stroking and petting the fabulous felines. If you have a child under 11 make sure you book a special slot via their website.
Toys N Tuck Toy Shop
This family run business is 30 years old and the perfect place for youngsters to spend their pocket money and pick up a treat. They pride themselves on a friendly atmosphere for customers of all ages – and we love supporting local businesses!
Astro City
Astro City is a retro arcade just opposite Indirock’s home, The Victoria Centre, on Southend high street. It can be booked for children’s birthday parties, where the kid’s can play over 50 machines and games that we’ve set to free play. Or if you want to go during a public session, they’re open every Friday evening, weekends and selected school holiday weekdays.
And of course…
Indirock!
Anyone aged 6+ can climb at Indirock any time, and we offer classes for kids as young as 1! Throughout the summer holidays we’ll be running kids clubs pretty much every day, meaning you can drop your child off and get some work done in our cafe or get some shopping done. We have plenty on offer for adults too, so the whole family can enjoy a climb and a good workout.
