25 Jan Southend-on-sea’s hidden gems
Southend-on-sea has a reputation for creativity, at least among locals, and over the years has been home to musicians, artists, creatives, healers and business owners with a shared love of this coastal town.
Mods, Rockers, Punks and Teddy Boys have graced its streets. With a rich history, Southend also boasts beautiful Victorian architecture (and some Brutalist gems too) and conservation areas which never cease to delight residents and visitors.
Over the past decade the high street has suffered with many shops closing their doors, but the creative spirit hasn’t let our city down. There’s a new wave of hip and imaginative businesses reinvigorating the area and giving locals a reason to flock to the high street once more.
Indirock bouldering wall and coffee shop is one of the newest businesses on the block and we’ve been getting to know our neighbours over the past year, especially the ones who offer something to tempt the tastebuds. Here are some of Southend’s foodie hidden gems, and places we’ve enjoyed seeking out… enjoy!
The Mews
Hidden down Nelson Mews, just a stone’s throw from Southend Central station, is The Mews. This stunning venue includes a beautifully designed dining room – with one of the best Sunday roasts for miles! Open Wed-Sun they also have a bar menu for lunch, music and DJ’s if you’re after a lively evening out, and mocktails and cocktails – so something for everyone. Honestly, this place is a beaut!
La Petit Petanque
Next on our list is La Petite Petanque which is nestled in the Southend conservation area. The building is a beautiful 1920’s original bowling club pavilion, which now houses the restaurant overlooking the bowling green. There is outdoor seating for when the weather is nice but the real pull is the interior which is decorated in Art Deco delights and the perfect accompaniment to your delicious Afternoon Tea. If you want an escape from reality and delicious food to go with it, this is the place for you!
Twenty One
Right on the seafront is Twenty One, a community and creative space, run in partnership with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and Focal Point Gallery. Offering a cafe with cakes, plant-based products and incredible pizza, this venue also hosts local artists and performers and unique events. As one of the most inventive music venues in town, this is definitely one to visit.
Indirock Coffee Shop
Last but not least, we can’t not include our little gem: the Indirock Coffee Shop, which we like to think of as the most colourful and funky space in Southend! A sister to our bouldering wall, the coffee shop offers a children’s play area, barista coffee, smoothies and healthy snacks, as well as a full lunch menu suitable for grown-ups and smalls. We also host some fantastic events, including quiz nights, themed socials, a brunch club and our monthly Werewolf night which is starting in 2023
We’re excited about the future of Southend, both as residents and business owners, and these are just a handful of our must-visit places! If you’re interested in what Indirock has on offer, keep an eye on our social media, and check out the Insta’s of these lovely businesses to see what they have coming up!
