Bouldering Together: Changing Lives in Southend

At Indirock, we believe that climbing is about more than just reaching the top—it’s about confidence, connection, and finding your footing in the world. And that’s exactly why we teamed up with local mental health charity, Trust Links, to deliver our ambitious Bouldering Together project for vulnerable young people across Southend.

A safe space to climb, connect, and just be

Running three times a week after school, Bouldering Together offers relaxed, drop-in climbing sessions for teens and young adults—especially those facing mental health challenges or at risk of isolation and anti-social behaviour.

There’s no pressure to perform, no need to book, and no judgment. Just turn up, climb a little (or a lot), hang out in our café, and be part of something positive.

Every session costs just £1 and includes a café voucher for a fresh smoothie or a snack box, helping make healthy food and social connection part of the experience. It’s a small investment that gives young people a big sense of agency and belonging.

Climbing builds more than strength

Since the project launched in September 2024, we’ve delivered over 130 hours of youth work, with an average of 7–10 young people climbing per session—many of whom were previously unknown to local services like Trust Links.

The impact has been huge.

Young people report improvements in:

  • Self-confidence and motivation

  • Mental and physical wellbeing

  • Social skills and friendships

  • Anger management and emotional regulation

  • School attendance and engagement

And parents are noticing the difference too.

“My daughter hasn’t joined in PE at school in years, but now she looks forward to climbing every week. Her confidence has grown so much—we’ve seen a massive shift.” – Rachel’s mum

“I used to stay in the house and keep to myself. Now I talk to people, I’ve made friends, and I feel more involved.” – Rachel, 14

A project that meets young people where they are

Our sessions are designed to be accessible, flexible, and trauma-informed, with support from experienced youth workers from Trust Links. Whether participants are climbing, chatting, or just being in the space, they’re building trust, self-worth, and valuable life skills in a calm, supportive environment.

For some, it’s a place to escape everyday stress. For others, it’s a launchpad to something bigger.

“Climbing helps me take my anger out safely. I haven’t snapped at anyone in my family since I started coming here.” – Michael, 17

“It helps me feel like I can improve myself without pressure.” – Rosie, 17

“It’s like being in a different world. I don’t have to think about anything else while I’m climbing.” – David, 19

Reaching for a brighter future

At its heart, Bouldering Together is about more than just climbing. It’s about giving young people the chance to feel stronger, safer, and more seen. This Metal Health Awareness Week, we wanted to take the opportunity to shout out all the amazing young people who have overcome fears, given bouldering a go and are making this project the success that it is.
