Starting your bouldering journey is an exciting adventure, and we’re here to help make it as fun and rewarding as possible!
At Indirock, we love supporting climbers of all levels—especially those just getting started. Here are some tips and tricks to help you feel more confident on the wall:
1. Let Your Feet Do the Work
Your legs are way stronger than your arms, so use them to your advantage! Focus on precise foot placements and trust your shoes—they’re designed to grip even the tiniest footholds. A good trick is to practice “silent climbing” (placing your feet without making noise) to improve your control.
2. Save Energy by Keeping Your Arms Straight
Instead of pulling yourself up with your arms, try to keep them straight whenever possible. This way, your bones (rather than your muscles) take on most of the work, helping you conserve energy and climb longer.
3. Engage Your Core
Your core is key to smooth, controlled movements. Strengthening it will take some pressure off your arms and make climbing feel more effortless. Adding core exercises to your routine can make a big difference!
4. Learn to Fall (It’s Part of the Fun!)
Falling is totally normal in bouldering—it’s how you push yourself to improve. Learning to fall safely will boost your confidence and keep you injury-free. At Indirock, we’ll show you how to land properly so you can climb with peace of mind.
5. Find a Climbing Buddy
Climbing is even better when you share the experience. Other climbers can offer encouragement, helpful tips, and an extra push when you’re tackling a tricky route. And there’s no need to bring a buddy with you – you’re sure to make a heap of new friends just by climbing at Indirock!
6. Join a Ready To Rock Session
If you’re not sure where to start, our Ready To Rock sessions are perfect for beginners. We’ll walk you through techniques, movement, and problem-solving so you can climb smarter, not harder. Plus, you’ll learn how to read routes, improve balance, and feel more confident on the wall.
7. Understand Climbing Grades
At Indirock, we use the V grading system, from V0 (easiest) to V9 (advanced). To check a route’s difficulty, just flip the white tab on the wall—it’ll tell you the grade so you can pick a challenge that suits you.
8. But don’t get put off by grades, either!
Remember that grading is subjective and it’s only there as a guide. That’s why, when one climbing zone gets fresh routes every Monday, we leave the grades off all the new routes for the first week. This encourages you to have a go without knowing the grade, hopefully making it easier to give things a go rather than getting put off by a grade.
9. Take Breaks and Refuel
Resting between climbs helps your muscles recover so you can climb longer. And hey, our coffee shop is the perfect place to recharge with some delicious cakes, snacks, and fresh coffee. Whether you need a quick break or a post-climb treat, we’ve got you covered.
10. Enjoy the Journey
Bouldering isn’t just about reaching the top—it’s about the progress, the problem-solving, and the little victories along the way. Celebrate every win, no matter how small, and enjoy the ride!
Indirock is Essex’s biggest bouldering wall, offering top quality indoor rock climbing for all ages. We also have a great coffee shop!
