Tried bouldering indoors and ready to take it outside? We’re stoked for you! Outdoor bouldering and climbing adds fresh air, real rock, and a whole new level of adventure.
If you’re a climber at Indirock it’s likely you’re based in Essex, which just happens to be one of the flattest counties in the UK… So we thought we’d put together a quick guide on a few local outdoor climbing spots to get started, plus some world-class destinations worth a weekend trip (or more!).
Here’s our guide to the best places to try outdoor climbing if you’re local to Essex.
🧱 Local(ish) Gems to Try First
These are all within a couple of hours’ drive — ideal for day trips or short climbs when the sun’s out.
🪨 Harrison’s Rocks (East Sussex)
📍 About 1hr 45 mins from South Essex
Best for: Easy to moderate sandstone routes, scenic setting, trad vibes
Harrison’s is one of the most popular outdoor climbing spots in the South East. While it’s known more for roped climbing, there are some good low-grade traverses and short boulders to try. The sandstone is soft though, so make sure you climb gently.
🧗 Bulls Hollow & Bowles Rocks (Tunbridge Wells area)
📍 Around 1hr 30 from Essex
Best for: Gentle intro to outdoor holds and slab-style problems
These sandstone crags are close to Harrison’s and have a great range of beginner-friendly climbs. Bowles is also a private site with good facilities, and you’ll find plenty of traverses to build confidence. Again, it’s sandstone, so treat it with care and avoid climbing after rain.
🏞️ Fairlop Waters Boulder Park (Redbridge, NE London)
📍 Just 45 mins from Southend
Best for: Outdoor-style practice without leaving the city
Okay, this isn’t real rock — but it’s a water park with purpose-built outdoor boulders made from molded concrete. A great stepping stone between gym climbing and the real outdoors. You’ll still need a crash pad and spotters, and the problems are varied enough to simulate real routes.
🌍 World-Class Bouldering Destinations (For a Weekend Trip!)
Once you’ve cut your teeth locally, why not plan a weekend (or week!) at one of these legendary spots? They’re all doable from Essex with a bit of planning.
🌲 Fontainebleau, France
📍 Just the Eurostar + a short drive away
Best for: EVERYTHING — the world’s most famous bouldering destination
Think forest magic, thousands of sandstone blocs, and problems from V0 to elite. Font (as climbers call it) is a rite of passage for any boulderer. Bring a few crash pads, friends, and snacks. Stay at a local gîte or campsite and soak up the culture and the climbs.
🏔️ The Peak District (Derbyshire)
📍 Around 3.5–4 hours from Essex
Best for: Gritstone bouldering, epic views, climbing heritage
The Peak is packed with iconic crags like Stanage, Burbage, and The Roaches. Gritstone is a unique rock — grippy but skin-tiring — and the bouldering is brilliant. You’ll find classics at every level and loads of beta online. Be sure to bring warm layers; the Peak can be brisk even in summer!
🌊 Portland (Dorset)
📍 About 3.5–4 hours from Essex
Best for: Sea cliff vibes, solid limestone problems, weekend escapes
Portland is a sunny, scenic spot with fantastic coastal bouldering and sport climbing. The limestone can be sharp, but the setting is unbeatable. Ideal for a long weekend when the weather’s good. You’ll find great camping and climber-friendly pubs nearby too.
🧳 What You’ll Need to Get Started Outdoors:
- A crash pad (or two)
- Climbing shoes
- Chalk & a brush (especially for sandstone)
- A spotter (aka a buddy!)
- Ideally an experienced outdoor climber, to show you the ropes!
- Plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen
- Respect for nature – Leave No Trace, always
👋 Final Thoughts
Climbing outdoors is a totally different experience than gym bouldering — and that’s what makes it exciting! Whether you’re staying close to home or road-tripping across the UK (or France!), there’s a climb out there with your name on it.
