Good Chalk Etiquette – Part 1

Small particulate matter and respiratory health – why it matters

Have you ever noticed a cloud of chalk hanging in the air after someone tops a climb or claps their hands? It might disappear from sight after a few moments, but many of those tiny particles stay suspended in the air for much longer than you might think.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing simple ways we can all help create a healthier climbing environment. But for now, let’s tackle the first question: “Why does the way we use chalk matter?“.

Those tiny chalk particles are known as particulate matter (PM), a term used to describe microscopic particles suspended in the air.

The smaller the particle, the longer it can remain airborne and the deeper it can travel into the respiratory system when breathed in.

Climbing chalk is made from magnesium carbonate and, for most healthy climbers, occasional exposure isn’t expected to cause lasting health problems. However, reducing chalk dust creates a cleaner, more comfortable environment for everyone, especially those who spend long periods in the gym or have asthma, allergies or other respiratory conditions.

Research has shown that indoor climbing gyms can have elevated levels of airborne particulate matter, with climbing chalk being one of the main contributors. Every chalky clap, overfilled chalk bag and dusty landing adds a little more to the air before those particles are eventually removed through ventilation, filtration or cleaning.

Good chalk etiquette isn’t about using less chalk, it’s about using it more effectively.

The good news is that small changes can make a big difference.

And that’s exactly what we’re hoping to achieve with this series.

Stay tuned for our weekly Good Chalk Etiquette posts, where we’ll share tips, facts and what IndiRock is doing to help keep the air cleaner.
