Bouldering & Neurodivergence on World Autism Awareness Day

As we observe World Autism Awareness Day, we wanted to shout out our long-standing partnership with charity SEND the Right Message and our weekly bouldering club for children with SEND (Specific Educational Needs and Disabilities).

Understanding Neurodivergence

Neurodivergence means that a person’s brain functions differently from a neurotypical person, including differences and conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Anxiety and others.

The Benefits of Bouldering

Bouldering offers a unique blend of physical challenge and mental engagement, making it particularly suitable for neurodivergent individuals. Here are some key benefits:

  1. Enhances Focus and Concentration: The problem-solving nature of bouldering routes, requires climbers to concentrate deeply, fostering improved attention skills.

  2. Promotes Sensory Integration: Engaging with different textures and movements helps individuals process sensory information effectively, which can be beneficial for those with sensory processing differences.

  3. Builds Physical Strength and Coordination: Bouldering develops muscle strength, balance, and motor planning, contributing to overall physical health.

  4. Encourages Social Interaction: Bouldering gyms are inherently sociable, with climbers supporting one another with problem-solving or encouragement during a climb, which aids social skill development.

  5. Boosts Confidence and Resilience: Overcoming climbing challenges can enhance self-esteem and perseverance, valuable traits for personal growth.

Indirock: Creating an Inclusive Bouldering Environment

At Indirock, we are incredibly fortunate to be part of a sport and a community that naturally welcomes and supports neurodivergent individuals. We recognise the immense benefits bouldering offers and strive to create an environment where everyone feels included and celebrated.

To maximise accessibility and enjoyment for neurodivergent climbers, we:

  1. Educate Staff and Climbers: Our team is dedicated to fostering an understanding and supportive atmosphere for all.

  2. Offer Sensory-Friendly Sessions: We turn off the music once a week for our quiet climbing sessions and also offer a quiet corner.

  3. Provide Clear Instructions: Our routes and safety protocols are designed to be clear, with visual aids and concise explanations to support different learning styles.

  4. Encourage Flexible Participation: We welcome climbers to engage at their own pace, whether climbing solo, in groups, or with additional support.

Maggie Cleary, CEO of SEND the Right Message said:

“We’ve run weekly, fully-funded bouldering sessions at Indirock for young people from Southend, Castle Point and Rochford for three years now, and it’s something we always prioritise in our fundraising.

Bouldering offers autistic and other neurodivergent children and young people a unique space to build confidence, develop coordination, and experience a sense of achievement in a supportive, low-pressure environment. It’s more than just climbing — it’s about empowerment, resilience, and joy.”

Vicki Lamb, Trustee of SEND the Right Message said:

“It is Autism Awareness Day and while awareness is important, acceptance is the ultimate goal. It’s the reason STRM set up the bouldering club at Indirock in the first place; we wanted autistic kids to know that when the world feels overwhelming or uninviting, they could always come to our bouldering club and know it was safe and welcoming.

Celebrating Neurodivergence Through Bouldering

Bouldering presents a promising avenue for supporting the well-being of neurodivergent individuals, offering physical, cognitive, and social benefits. At Indirock, we’re proud to be part of this movement and to provide a welcoming, supportive space where all climbers—regardless of ability—can thrive.

On this World Autism Awareness Day, let’s celebrate these amazing young climbers and the incredible support that SEND the Right Message offers them.
