5 things you didn’t know about bouldering

Bouldering has become one of the most popular forms of climbing over the past few years, thanks to its debut at the Summer 2020 Tokyo Olympics. It’s a type of climbing that involves short routes without the use of ropes or harnesses.

While many people are familiar with traditional roped climbing, some might not really know the what’s and why’s of bouldering, especially when it comes to the indoor kind. So here are 5 things you probably didn’t know about bouldering:

  1. Bouldering is a great workout for the body and mind

Bouldering requires a lot of strength and endurance. Climbers need to be able to support their body weight with their hands, arms, and core muscles while making precise movements on the rock or climbing wall. That said, it’s not all about muscles, and sometimes the most agile boulderers are those with a strong core, stamina and focus. As it also requires mental focus and concentration, it’s a great enhancement to your mental wellbeing too.

  1. Bouldering can be done indoors

While outdoor bouldering is a popular activity, it can be difficult to find suitable locations and weather conditions, especially in Essex which is a pretty flat county! Indoor bouldering gyms have become increasingly popular in recent years, offering climbers a safe and controlled environment to practice their skills. These venues typically have a variety of routes at different difficulty levels, allowing climbers of all skill levels to participate. As well as offering this experience at Indirock, we’ve sampled many indoor bouldering walls across the county and further afield, and they all offer something different as well as a supportive vibe. It’s an incredible community!

  1. Bouldering has its own grading system

Like other forms of climbing, bouldering has its own grading system to help climbers understand the difficulty level of a particular route. The V-scale (or Vermin scale) is the most commonly used rating system for bouldering. The V-scale ranges from VB (very easy) to V16 (extremely difficult). The rating takes into account factors such as the angle of the wall, the number and size of holds, and the complexity of the movements required. At Indirock, we usually go up to V9, which is extremely difficult!

  1. Bouldering doesn’t require a lot of gear

If you’re bouldering outdoors you’ll need to be a little more prepared, but if you’re visiting a venue such as Indirock, you don’t need much equipment at all! We supply the crash mats to soften your fall, and the walls are at a height that limits the risk of injury.  You do need to wear the correct footwear and most walls hire climbing shoes so you can decide if you’re going to become a regular before investing in your own pair. Chalk is optional as your hands may slip or become sore, and we like the liquid variety as it doesn’t throw dust into the air. Other than that, comfy clothing, a water bottle and any snacks you fancy are all you need.

  1. Bouldering is a social activity

Bouldering can be a great way to meet new people and build a sense of community. Many bouldering gyms offer group classes and events, as well as opportunities to participate in competitions and outdoor trips. Climbing with others can also provide motivation and support, helping climbers push themselves to achieve their goals.

We obviously love it, and here’s why: bouldering is a challenging and rewarding activity that offers many benefits for both physical and mental health. With the right training and friendly community around you (the friendly vibe at Indirock’s is second to none!) bouldering can be a fun and fulfilling way to stay active and meet new people.

Indirock is the biggest indoor bouldering wall in Essex and we’d love to see you. All ages 6+ can climb any time at Indirock, and we have activities on offer for the younger ones too. We also have some great recommendations for walls around the country so if you’re interested, drop us a message.
