New to Climbing? Here’s Your Beginner’s Guide to Indirock!

So, you’re thinking about giving climbing a go? First off—YES! We’re thrilled you’re here.

Whether you’re brand new to bouldering or getting back into it after a break, this guide will give you everything you need to feel confident, prepared, and ready to have fun on the wall. Let’s go!

👕 What to Wear

The golden rule: wear what you’d be comfy working out in. You don’t need fancy gear to get started.

  • Tops: Go for fitted, breathable tops—or a baggy t-shirt if that’s your thing! Have you seen the awesome Indirock designs in our shop?

  • Bottoms: Leggings, joggers, or shorts that let you move freely are ideal.

  • Climbing shoes: These make a huge difference ton safety and are mandatory. They give your feet the grip and support needed to balance and push off holds. No need to own your own – you can rent a pair from us for just £3.50 per session.

  • Extras: Tie your hair back and take off any jewelry—especially rings—for safety and comfort.

🎒 What to Bring

You don’t need a lot, but a few things can make your session even better:

  • Water & snacks: Staying hydrated is key, and a little fuel helps too. If you forget, our café has you covered with drinks, snacks, and amazing cakes.

  • Chalk: Helps you keep your grip when your hands get sweaty. You can rent chalk and a chalk bag here for just £2, or you can buy your own here too.

🧠 Top Tips for Beginner Climbers

Not sure where to start? Keep these in mind to climb smarter, not harder:

  • Use your legs: They’re stronger than your arms—use them to push yourself up. Contrary to popular belief, climbing is not all about upper body strength!

  • Keep arms straight: Helps you conserve energy and avoid burning out too fast.

  • Plan ahead: Before you hop on, take a moment to look at the route and figure out how you’ll climb it.

  • Footwork matters: Your toes are your secret weapon. Place your feet carefully for better balance.

  • Take breaks: There’s no rush! Rest when you need to, to avoid fatigue.

  • Always climb down: Don’t jump—seriously. Even from a short height, jumping can cause injuries. Use the holds to descend safely.

  • Say hi! Climbing is super social. Ask for tips, cheer others on, and make new friends while you rest.
